Your wedding day is one of the biggest days of your life, and while it’s meant to be magical, it can easily become stressful without a solid timeline in place. As a wedding photographer, I can tell you firsthand: a thoughtful wedding day schedule is everything.
It ensures you’re relaxed, fully present, and that your vendors (and guests!) know what’s happening next. Whether you’re choosing to do a first look or keeping it traditional, your timeline needs to maximize natural light, photography opportunities, and most importantly, your peace of mind.
Here’s a general breakdown of what a typical wedding day includes:
Pro Tip: Plan your ceremony start time 2 hours before sunset if you want dreamy golden-hour photos! (Use a sunset calculator to find the best timing.)
Here’s an example for a 5:00 PM ceremony:
11:00 AM – Hair and Makeup Begins (for bride + bridal party)
1:00 PM – Photographer Arrives; Detail Photos (rings, dress, flat lays — helpful details checklist HERE)
2:00 PM – Bride Gets Dressed
2:30 PM – First Look and Couple Portraits
3:30 PM – Bridal Party Photos
4:15 PM – Family Formals
5:00 PM – Ceremony
5:30 PM – Cocktail Hour (you can enjoy it too since most portraits are done!)
6:30 PM – Reception Begins
7:00 PM – Grand Entrance + First Dance
7:30 PM – Dinner Served
8:15 PM – Speeches
8:45 PM – Cake Cutting
9:00 PM – Dancing Begins!
10:30 PM – Grand Exit (think fun send-off ideas like sparklers or ribbon wands)
If you prefer seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony (I love this too!), here’s a sample for a 5:00 PM ceremony:
11:00 AM – Hair and Makeup Begins
1:00 PM – Photographer Arrives; Detail Photos
2:30 PM – Bride Gets Dressed
3:00 PM – Bridesmaids and Groomsmen Photos (separately)
4:30 PM – Guests Begin Arriving
5:00 PM – Ceremony
5:30 PM – Family Formals
6:00 PM – Bridal Party Photos (full group)
6:30 PM – Bride and Groom Portraits (during golden hour!)
7:00 PM – Grand Entrance + First Dance
7:30 PM – Dinner
8:15 PM – Speeches
8:45 PM – Cake Cutting
9:00 PM – Dancing Begins
10:30 PM – Grand Exit
Note: Without a first look, you’ll need to fit all family, bridal party, and couple portraits between the ceremony and reception. Talk with your photographer about how to optimize that time efficiently.
